Freedom Hunters Fruit Shoot and the Federal 224 Valkyrie

Whilst receiving prepared to make the extended drive for this Wyoming-primarily based shooting trip, I packed all the essential variety private protective gear. What I didn’t comprehend was that I would also require a bowl to catch the significant, juicy chunks of fruit that flew close to me and fell on me. If only I had recognized that a Federal 224 Valkyrie round would send chunks of watermelon flying so far.

Soon after arriving in the Cody, Wyoming, location, I joined many guests of the non-profit organization Freedom Hunters, along with TeamWON writer Ashlee Lundvall, for the fruit shoot. Ashlee is our writer who is operating on the content material surrounding this intriguing round. In reality, you can study about the history of the cartridge and about her initially impressions – which integrated fruit shooting – right here.

Greg Buchel, who owns Huge Horn Armory in Cody, constructed a contemporary sporting rifle for us to use with the 224 – in distinct, 80.five grain Gold Medal Berger Hybrid in 224 Valkyrie. The rifle has a normal AR-15 reduce and adjustable butt stock, topped with a 224 Valkyrie upper that incorporates a rifle-length gas method on a stainless steel barrel with an A2 flash hider and complete length skeletonized forend.

In addition to offering the rifle, Greg came ready with a truckload of fruit, such as watermelons, cantaloupes and pineapples. We drove out into the foothills close to Cody, to an informal variety that had lots of space and backstops and would have no complications with the fruit salad we’d develop.

Greg and his crew from Huge Horn got the scene set, and Ashlee had initially honor of shooting watermelons.

None of us realized that this cartridge would have such an “explosive” impact on a melon at 25 yards. Later, at a further variety we tested the cartridge out farther – to 100 yards on paper.

Nonetheless, this shoot was all about the fruit. Ashlee will be operating with the Huge Horn rifle and 224 Valkyrie ammunition in the coming weeks to reveal its accurate capabilities, to see how nicely the ammo does at ranges helpful for varmint hunting and target shooting.
