Ok people, let’s get severe about anything. ICE CREAM.
If you know something about me and most lengthy distance hikers that I’ve met along my thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail this year (2019), you know that WE Adore ICE CREAM. We typically come floating on fumes into town and are seeking for sweet, sweet calories. What superior way to fill our tanks than with anything scrumptious?!
As I continued along my journey north, I located myself enjoying ice cream each and every opportunity that I could. This became somewhat of a trend for mates and household watching along on social media. Pals couldn’t wait to see my subsequent “sweet” photo (pun intended). I even received messages from mates, producing positive I was alright, if I hadn’t posted one particular in a whilst. I enjoyed alot of ice cream in the course of the five and a half months I spent enjoying the trail. As quite a few persons have requested, I have decided to make a ranking of some of my favored ice cream stops.
disclaimer: there are quite a few extra ice creams not pictured. Also this ranking is only my opinion.
So let’s get appropriate to it. My Top rated 10 ice cream treats of the Appalachian Trail!
Scoggins Cool Shack
This was the final ice cream I had on trail, so it gets a spot on the list for that. Also, who does not like a classic twist soft serve with jimmies/sprinkles?
Billy T’s Northside Dairy Bar
This dairy bar had some truly exclusive treats, and I was truly delighted with one particular of my favorites. Hot fudge Sundae with peanut butter sauce and peanuts. A single of their exclusive treats had rainbow ice cream with cotton candy and candy bits. I didn’t dare attempt it, but a buddy did and she was all for it!
Zoe’s Cafe & Ice Cream Emporium
Deleware Water Gap, PA
All I have to say, is homemade chocolate ice cream and a homemade waffle cone to celebrate finishing the torturous state of PA!
#10 Diane’s Twist Ice Cream
Diane’s was appropriate on trail and provided hikers a spot to quit for lunch, a treat and a cold soda. We stopped to take a rest and have a sandwich, and you know I couldn’t say no to a cone. I opted for the brownie ice cream, and it was fantastic. Vanilla ice cream with brownie chunks, was surely a small distinctive. Ordinarily brownie pieces would be in chocolate ice cream, but honestly, I felt it new and cool. Not to mention, Diane was a sweetheart!
#9 C&C Frozen Treats
Front Royal, VA
Flavor: Chocolate Brownie
Finishing the SNP section of the trail calls for a celebration! We spent half a day in Front Royal and debated on stopping in for ice cream. C&C was appropriate on the primary drag close to the hiker base camp (surely verify it out). Chocolate Brownie ice cream on a homemade waffle cone was precisely what I required. Super wealthy and creamy! The ice cream shop also had a funny carnival mirror that we laughed whilst enjoying our cones!
#eight Tacos & Cones
Soon after finding into town, resupplying and enjoying a hot meal at the pub, we had been on the search for a fantastic treat. We stumbled into this spot and loved the art on the wall. I settled for a s’mores waffle cone (noticing a trend on cone option?) and was not disappointed! I recall the flavor of the actual ice cream becoming truly flavorful and oh-so-fantastic!
#7 Sweet Peas Ice Cream
Flavor: Camo Hero
As a veteran, I truly appreciated this sweet treat. Camo Hero is a green colored toasted marshmallow and graham flavored ice cream with peanut butter frosting and chunks of chocolate cookies. It was super rich and exactly what I needed on that day!
#six Bellvale Farms Creamery
Flavor: Blueberry Swirl
Soon after a hot and waterless day on the trail, I knew this creamery was only a couple of additional measures off trail. Soon after chugging a liter of spigot water from the side of the creating, I was greeted with a lengthy line to get my sweet treat. I located out why the line was so lengthy quickly. Homemade batches of ice cream and friendly employees, I was extremely happy with my waffle cone. It was creamy and not also wealthy. Some members of our group went back for a second cone!
#five Shenandoah National Park Waysides
Shenandoah National Park, VA
Haven’t we all heard about the MAGICAL BLACKBERRY MILKSHAKES at the waysides in SNP? We had been so excited to get to attempt the trail-renowned milkshakes, but had been super sad when each and every single wayside claimed their milkshake machine was broken. Confident SNP, they are all broken.. smh. Fortunately they had a deliciously redeeming treat. Their difficult scoop blackberry ice cream was a good option.
It could have not been the legendary milkshake, but the blackberry ice cream was a close second.
#4 Moose Scoops Ice Cream
My tramily and I located ourselves in Warren, NH needing a resupply and a hot breakfast. Warren was a blip on the map, but we struck gold whilst we had been there. Aside from the actual missile and the bomb.com breakfast we had, we located Moose Scoops Ice Cream.
They provided totally free wifi, a spot for us to hang-out, inside and out, and scrumptious ice cream. They had homemade waffle cones, which is constantly a bonus! They had a significant assortment of flavors to opt for from, and I chose properly with S’mores!
#3 Kline’s Dairy Bar
Flavor: Hot Fudge Sundae w/ Peanut Butter Sauce & Whipped Cream
A single of my absolute favored ice cream treats is a hot fudge sundae with peanut butter sauce. Kline’s truly knew how to hit the spot! This spot is situated off trail in the town of Waynesboro. The soft serve was so creamy and the peanut butter sauce was Fantastic! The only downside to this treat was I had to spend 50 cents for whipped cream. You are killin’ me Kline’s!!
#2 Brushy Mountain Outpost
flavor: Blueberry Cheesecake
THE RUNNER UP! For some cause, Brushy Mountain Outpost sticks out in my thoughts! Soon after hanging out and enjoying lunch at this small gem of a spot I decided I required a sweet treat.
This flavor was so wealthy and scrumptious. There had been chunks of cheesecake that had been creamy and remarkable. I recall pondering I had hit the jackpot with how quite a few pieces of cheesecake had been in this cone. The waffle cone was crunchy to boot!
#1 Heaven Hill Farm
Flavor: Graham Central
This was MY Favourite ICE CREAM ON TRAIL. Let’s set the scene…
It was a super hot day in sunny New Jersey and I was sweaty! I knew that there was a road side “market” and hot dog stand coming up. As I created it to the road, I turned left and located myself standing out front of Heaven Hill. I entered and located the ice cream and decided to attempt a flavor I’ve never ever attempted just before: Graham Central. It was a graham cracker flavored ice cream with chocolate covered pretzel pieces.
It was such a dreamy flavor and the waffle cone was crispy, just the way I appreciate it! Probably it was the hot day, the fantastic mood I was in, or the flavor of ice cream, but right here you have it people. My quantity one particular ice cream of the whole AT!
p.s. this flavor was also in the dining facility at Dartmouth exactly where we had been swiped in for a totally free hot meal. I was so delighted to be reunited with this ice cream.
Nicely people, there you have it. The most vital weblog post of my whole thru-hike. Now go out into the planet and consume your heart out.
