AN ASG EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: HOW MYKEL HAWKE BECAME A SURVIVAL Specialist
In 2017, American Survival Guide made a quantity of instruction segments with Mykel Hawke, U.S. Army Particular Forces combat veteran, government contractor, well-liked star of numerous Discovery, Outside and Travel Channel series, and survival professional and author.
Amongst requires at the ALTAIR Instruction Facility in the Florida Everglades, ASG contributor Brian M. Morris had the chance to speak with Mykel about his previous and what tends to make him tick. This is the initially of a 3-portion series that aids us recognize much more about Mykel Hawke and how he came to be a major survival abilities professional. He is a fascinating guy, and we appreciate his time and input on the ASG instruction segments and for answering Brian’s inquiries.
American Survival Guide: Our readers fall beneath a wide spectrum of demographics. A lot of are outside enthusiasts and minimalists who want to understand primitive bushcraft and survival abilities.
Other folks are modern day-day pioneers who want to reside off the grid, and lots of much more are preppers. They see the possibility of catastrophic events that could undermine America’s infrastructure, and lead to the government to collapse or even bring all-out warfare on our soil—thereby heightening the want to guard themselves, their households and their house.
Possibly the biggest group is interested in emergency preparedness and getting prepared for unforeseen organic and man-produced disasters, as a outcome of which it could be days or weeks prior to initially responders can attain them. Exactly where do you most see oneself inside that spectrum?
Mykel Hawke: I have a family members, youngsters and grandkids. I love spending time with them. Likewise, I have spent a excellent deal of my adult life in war zones and deployed to remote, underdeveloped areas.
I have no need to go reside an isolated existence, waiting for the planet to finish or living in worry of some important disaster. Each can take place and are realistic possibilities. Nevertheless, my selection is to remain in the planet and be portion of it, since I spent a lot of time out of it currently.
That stated, I am a military man a Green Beret and officer, in truth. And that implies I reside by a code [stipulating that] if items go poor, I will stand up and step in to do my portion to make items improved. So, I am someplace amongst the preppers, who are prepared for something, the off-gridders, who are prepared to be self-reliant as lengthy as it requires, and the minimalists in that I have constantly taught, in my books, my courses and even in my shows, that we can survive naked, since it is how our ancestors began.
Likewise, with numerous communications and intelligence backgrounds, I am all about geek gadgets that can enable and, not least of all, I am a military survivalist. This implies I am prepared to fight and defend what I appreciate and think in. How’s that for a “political” answer?
ASG: American Survival Guide bases its content material on the notion of the “Six Pillars of Survival”: meals, water, shelter, safety, communications and wellness. [Editor’s note: For more information about American Survival Guide’s Six Pillars of Survival system, check out our article here.] No a single pillar is much more essential than the other individuals till the survivor determines how they want to prioritize them, primarily based on their ever-altering scenario. Can you feel of any location we may well have forgotten to cover?
MH: Yes. I essentially think there is an eight-pillar technique, like 4 legs of a table with 4 supporting legs. Meals, water, fire and shelter are perennial primaries. Though they may well rotate in order of precedence primarily based on situations, they should be addressed in just about every scenario. Subsequent are the secondaries: health-related, navigation, communication and tools. Beneath “communication” is “signal” and all the things about it. Beneath “tools” are “weapons” (as a tool for hunting or defense), but these are essential sub-categories, according to my survival methods.
ASG: Let’s speak a small bit about you. Inform us about your childhood. What was it like for a young Mykel Hawke increasing up? How did your childhood experiences influence the man you grew up to be?
MH: I address a lot of this in the initially chapter of my big book, The Green Beret Survival Manual. It defines who I became and why I teach the way I do. I grew up poor, so I had to survive a lot off the streets and in the woods. That got me into survival.
But we grew up as white poor in black neighborhoods we got beat up a lot just for getting white. My brother and I could not defend against gangs, but when a single gang member attempted to fight me alone in 5th grade, I fought back and crushed him. He brought his larger “cousin” the subsequent day, and I crushed him, also. From that point on, I decided to fight bullies and enable other individuals. That led to me becoming a Green Beret. As a single oneself, Brian, you know that we fight to cost-free the oppressed—no higher mission!
ASG: Did you have any heroes increasing up?
MH: Yes two sorts. As a kid, I had a couple of males in my life who have been my genuine heroes. Earl, Ed and Pete have been the most significant ones.
Earl was my stepfather, a Marine in the Korean War who retired following 27 years as a cop and fireman. He taught me honor. Ed was in Pearl Harbor when it was bombed and then on a glider in Normandy on D-Day. He taught me to be a very good family members man. Pete was a Green Beret combat diver in Vietnam and then became an Air Force Black Ops pilot of choppers and planes. He taught me what it was to be a warrior: fierce, sincere, and humble. These have been my father figures.
Then, I study the books, the comics, saw the films, and I saw the heroes in these who did what they believed was appropriate, no matter the price and against all odds. A lot of instances, they even failed but never ever wavered. They became my idol heroes— fictitious part models whom I chose to aspire to emulate and make myself what I believed I could, and must, be. [These were] people like Sergeant Rock, Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Kirk Douglas … old college, I know!
“I GREW UP POOR, SO I HAD TO SURVIVE A LOT OFF THE STREETS AND IN THE WOODS. THAT GOT ME INTO SURVIVAL.”
ASG: What is the most exciting factor about you or your life that cannot be discovered on Google?
MH: That is exciting and a enjoyable query. I essentially sing and play guitar, and I can dance. Perhaps I must take your wife’s suggestion and go on Dancing with the Stars!
ASG: What or who inspires you?
MH: Films. A lot of films inspire me. I am a massive fan of the Russell Crowe films, such as Master and Commander, Gladiator and Cinderella Man, as nicely as films such as Braveheart, Rob Roy, Equilibrium and Serenity—any film exactly where folks fight against all odds for truth and justice.
ASG: If you had to pick 5 words that describe who you are as a individual or what values you hold closest to your heart, what would they be?
MH: Philosophical, inventive, determined, caring, fair.
ASG: At 50 years old, you nevertheless appear and move like a guy in his 30s. What is the secret to your eternal youth?
MH: Satisfied hormones! I constantly say, I reside by the rule of no guidelines: I do what I think is appropriate at the time and do not be concerned about getting judged. I make it a mission to attempt never ever to harm yet another, so I have no fears of undertaking incorrect. If I am in a war zone and I want a smoke, I will smoke. If a pal has died, and I want a drink, I will drink. If a jerk acts like an ass to a weaker individual, I will kick his butt.
As such, I remain quite delighted, and I do feel the lack of be concerned and strain is a massive issue. Also lots of people be concerned about just about every calorie consumed or how they appear in the mirror at the fitness center! Also, I am positive my mother’s genes had a lot to do with it: She was a Greek beauty, so, I cannot claim significantly credit!
“I HAVE NO Wish TO GO Reside AN ISOLATED EXISTENCE, WAITING FOR THE Globe TO Finish OR LIVING IN Worry OF SOME Big DISASTER.”
ASG: Did you develop up hunting and fishing in the outdoors, or did you understand bushcraft abilities later in life?
MH: Oh man! Fishing was a really serious portion of my upbringing and is my passion now. We didn’t hunt significantly, since we couldn’t afford the weapons to do so. But we did what we could with bows and BB guns: We ate birds and rabbits and squirrels!
In portion two of this three-portion interview, we’ll discover Mykel Hawke’s profession in the U.S. Army, and he’ll talk about his transition to his function in tv.
