CTPOST.COM September 27, 2019 – New federal gun laws may well be
an early casualty of the enmity involving President Donald Trump and
congressional Democrats who have just launched an impeachment probe of the
president.

Sen.
Chris Murphy, who was attempting to negotiate a bill with the White Home that
would broaden FBI background checks of gun purchasers, had predicted that his
choice to assistance a Home impeachment inquiry of the president would
decrease, or has even eliminated, the probabilities of a deal.

But on
Wednesday afternoon, Murphy stated White Home officials reached out to him
Tuesday evening, just hours following Home Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the
starting of an impeachment inquiry.

“They
have been pushing back on my pessimism,” Murphy stated. “I’m glad to continue to speak
to the White Home.”

Murphy
stated the draft of a gun background bill submitted by U.S. Lawyer Common
William Barr to members of the Senate earlier this month is a “flawed, but fantastic
proposal” that could lead to a deal.

“The
subsequent step is the White House’s,” he stated.

But in
remarks Wednesday in New York, exactly where the president was attending a meeting of
the United Nations, Trump referred to as the impeachment inquiry, supported by the
whole Connecticut congressional delegation, “a manufactured crisis,” and stated
he didn’t know no matter if Democrats “are going to have time to do any bargains,”
such as 1 on background checks for gun purchasers.

“I do not
consider they can do any bargains,” the president stated. “You know, we have been functioning on
guns — gun security. They do not even speak — all they’re speaking about is
nonsense.”

The
president also stated “I’ll inform you what: Nancy Pelosi is not interested in guns
and gun protection and gun security. All she is considering about is this. She’s been
taken more than by the radical left, the complete Democratic Celebration.”

Hours
ahead of Pelosi announced an impeachment inquiry into Trump on Tuesday, the
president referred to as her to go over gun legislation. But, according to lawmakers
familiar with the contact, she quickly changed the topic to his telephone contact with the
Ukrainian president in which they discussed investigating former Vice President
Joseph Biden, a top contender for the Democratic presidential nomination,
and his son Hunter, the impetus for the impeachment inquiry.

And
Trump, in an usually rambling defense of his July 25 telephone contact to Ukrainian
President Volodymyr Zelensky, also accused Murphy Wednesday of “threatening”
the Ukrainian leader when the senator visited Kiev earlier this month.

“Senator
Chris Murphy actually threatened the president of Ukraine that if he does not
do points appropriate, they will not have Democrat assistance in Congress,” Trump stated.

Murphy stated he “made it clear that President Zelensky really should not be taking orders from the Trump campaign,” and decried the president’s attempts to pull the Ukrainian president “into corruption” by asking him to investigate the Bidens.  [Read More]
