Colorado Springs passes ordinance to call for bear-proof trash cans or options for some residents west of I-25

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Colorado Springs is now requiring bear-resistant trash cans, with presents of options, for some individuals who reside west of I-25.

It is no secret that region bears have treated west side neighborhoods as their personal individual buffet when residents have failed to safe their trash. For years, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has pleaded with the public to quit generating it so quick for bears to get meals.

“We need to have to preserve them away from individuals meals, and if they are finding into individuals meals we need to have to intervene,” Frank McGee with CPW told 11 News in a 2017 interview.

According to CPW, 30 bears have been euthanized in El Paso and Teller counties in 2017 since they came in get in touch with with humans.

“It’s definitely crucial not only for individuals but for the well being of the bears since after they begin to be aggressive and they get accustomed to meals, they break into a property, they’re not going to quit that behavior,” mentioned Richard Skorman, Colorado Springs City Council president and District three representative.

Skorman and District 1 Representative Don Knight scheduled two public meetings to get neighborhood input on the proposed ordinance.

The ordinance ordinance would call for individuals who reside west of I-25 who do not have a garage or a safe spot to leave their trash to get a bear-resistant can.

If individuals do have a garage, the ordinance needs that individuals wait till five a.m. on the day of their pickup to set their trash out and take it back inside by 7 p.m. that day.

Men and women can also get about the trash can requirement if they preserve their meals waste inside till trash day.

“We’re hunting to limit when trash cans are out that include foods that have some thing that would attract the bears to bring them into the city,” Knight mentioned. “We want the bears staying in the wildlife consuming their personal organic meals.”

Knight also recommended creating a structure about the trash cans that bears can not get into if individuals do not have a garage and do not want to get a bear-resistant can.

The least expensive solution for bear-resistant trash cans that 11 News discovered on line was about $200.

Knight mentioned it would go into impact March 1, 2020 so individuals would be ready when the bears wake up from hibernation.

“We want to preserve them up into the mountains consuming their organic meals and not coming in and consuming man-produced meals,” Knight mentioned.
