As law enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania crack down on gun violence, they are encountering a new difficulty: homemade, unregistered firearms. These do-it-your self firearms, typically referred to as “ghost guns,” are produced from components purchased on line, permitting owners to bypass a background verify and registration needs. FOX43 Reveals what police are undertaking to track seemingly untraceable firearms in their communities. Sergeant Jason Jay with York City Police heads the department’s 4-member Gun Violence Intervention System, recognized as the GVI unit. “Our mission is to get guns off the street and combat gun violence,” explained Sgt. Jay.   So far this year, the GVI unit had a hand in assisting the division recover at least 70 illegal firearms—guns that had been stolen, identified on somebody prohibited from owning a firearm, or devoid of serial numbers.
