Coalition to Cease Gun Violence Statement on the Passing of Congressman Elijah Cummings
Coalition to Cease Gun Violence Executive Director Josh Horwitz issued the following statement:
“This morning, the nation woke up to the extremely sad news that Congressman and Chairman of the Property Oversight Committee Elijah Eugene Cummings had died at the age of 68.
“Elijah Cummings was an icon in the fight for justice and peace. He was a voice for the voiceless and a warrior for his city, his neighborhood, and his nation. As Chairman of the Property Oversight Committee, he was a force of nature recognized for his simple questioning and impassioned speeches for the values that he believed in.
“He was a sturdy supporter of gun violence prevention and a fighter for laws that would create a safer and stronger America, in particular in his beloved Baltimore. He felt the discomfort of American gun violence. Baltimore is one particular of quite a few American cities exactly where the scourge of each day gun violence is largely ignored by the media and the American public. The people today impacted have been Elijah Cummings’ constituents, neighbors, good friends, and even his personal loved ones. In 2011, his nephew was tragically shot and killed at his college apartment in Virginia. Representative Cummings spoke normally of the discomfort and aggravation he felt when seeing white balloons or impromptu shrines of teddy bears and candles symbolizing gun violence victims. These tragedies are the cause he fought for and championed bills and policies that would lessen American gun violence, address criminal justice reform, and create stronger communities totally free from the epidemic triggered by our nation’s simple access to guns.
“In current years, Representative Cummings and his constituents have been unfairly and inhumanely attacked from the highest workplace in the land. His part as Chairman of the Property Oversight Committee was a threat to a corrupt and immoral administration. He employed that part to shine a light on almost everything from the administration’s cruel loved ones separation policy to investigating fraud at corrupt organizations like the National Rifle Association. In the face of attacks, Chairman Cummings in no way wavered or backed down. He in no way lowered himself or his reputation to vicious words and actions.
“Elijah Cummings is an American hero. His lifelong dedication to our democratic ideals will be celebrated and remembered as a beacon of light for the complete United States. Our nation is a improved location simply because of it. Our hearts are with his wife, loved ones, and neighborhood.”
