18.1 seconds to travel 1,320 feet, wheezing through the timing lights at 77mph. Even the Corvettes of the time strained to crack the nine-second 0-60 barrier.

Bleak days in the early 80s indeed. My 7 seat Durango R/T gets to 60 in just over 6 seconds and turns 14s.

My new bone stock Mustang GT has 460Hp and gets 24mpg. In 2004 I had a new Cobra that was rated at 390Hp and it was supercharged! The 5.0 Vanilla Ice rolled in was 225Hp. Golden indeed.

Good thing the “performance” qualifier was there.

Can’t argue with that in the literal sense…my F150 crewcab with a frickin’ 6 cyl Ecoboost does 91 in the 1/4, makes more hp and torque than the 5.0 and gets 20+ mpg on the highway. When it was new I took it on a lonely stretch and floored it, acceleration was fast until a few seconds in it felt like I hit a wall. I thought I broke the damn thing by doing that before a breakin until I looked down and saw 100 on the clock; the damn speed limiter kicked in. Don’t know how much beyond that it will do and I don’t actually need to do 100 either, but I soon after fixed that limiter shit with a tuner just on principle.

Still. Unfair to only compare this gen of efficient driveable technology only to that dark automotive time. Would you really choose that slick Korean sled or even a new Charger with too many doors over your choice of 60’s Detroit iron?

    There’s different kinds of performance.
